It's opinion time!

After ooh, about three years of going on about it, I am finally going to place an order with Bishopston Trading!

I need to place an order for a minimum of four 20-metre pieces of their fair trade organic cotton, so I'd like to do a little opinion poll to see which colours people actually like.

I've only listed the plain colours, because I don't have any exciting ideas of things to make from the stripes or checks. If you really like any of them, please feel free to say so in the comments.

You can see the colour chart here...

Poll #1050588 Bishopston Fabrics, Summer 2007

Please tick as many colours as you fancy...

If anyone would like to buy pieces of this fabric from me once it arrives, I'll be asking for £5 a metre, plus postage.

If anyone would like to join me on this order and buy a 20-metre length, the price per piece is £44 + VAT + shipping.

It's right at the end of the season for the Spring/Summer colours, so it's possible that some of these may no longer be available. If that's the case, I might be asking you all over again when the Autumn/Winter colours are released next month.

Also, it could take up to three months for the fabric to arrive (depending on whether it's in the UK already, or whether they need to ship more across from India), so this is not something to go for if you're in a hurry!

[edit] Don't forget that you can express an opinion on the colours, even if you have no intention of ever buying anything I might make from the fabric! ;)

I am not in a position to get anything, but [info]hairyears may be interested in fair-trade fabric for proper tailored shirts.

I don't think he can see this post, though.

Good point - I've made the post public now!

I would go halves with you on a 20m length of any blue or grey one if you want. (I was going to ask for 5m, but if 10m is £22 then I will do that!!) There is a dress in the offing!

Three months' time will be just fine. I will have somewhere to put it by then!

Cool!

I've just done sums though, and 10m will be £22 + VAT + shipping, which makes it about £30. But you do get double the fabric for only a fiver more!

I'll let you know before I place the order though, so you can decide what's best for you. :)

£3 a metre is not something I am going to object to :D

I certainly will join you. I have to think what colour though. Perhaps you should wait for the new colours to come out first?

Excellent, I hoped you would!

1) I am very impatient.
2) I don't want to miss out on that fabulous raspberry colour! ;)

As it's only a few weeks though, yes, it probably is more sensble to wait and see what the new colours are like. I might drop them an email and see whether they've got any raspberry left though...

I sent off for some more swatches from Loop today, too. I've managed to lose mine, and I think my price list was about two years old anyway. I can't believe it's taken me so long to figure out that now I've sold the printing kit, I can finally afford to order some lovely fabrics!

I can't imagine them not continuing with the raspberry colour. It is a proper autumn/winter colour too. :)

I am so excited. I shall have 'ethical' fabric to work with. :)

I should look at this tomorrow when I have a faster computer to load the colours...

I keep meaning to ask and now I have remembered: how long would you need to make an outfit for me to wear to my mum's wedding? It'd be a long skirt, of course, and one of those tops which gather under the bust and flow down to a point below the belly, disguising Gigantic Pseudo-Pregnant Belly Syndrome. Possibly also a shrug out of some kind of stretchy material, now that my arms are three sizes bigger than my torso. I know I'll never find anything suitable, and you're the only one I trust to make good clothes.

When is the wedding? As long as it's not too close to my sister's (October 13th), I'm sure we can work something out. We might have to do the fittings by post now that we're a bit further apart, but I'm sure we can come up with something.

And thank you very much. :)

Oh, the wedding's not until early April - I wouldn't get you to do something at really short notice, I know how your body conspires against you. I'm sure James'll be able to schlep me down to your place :)

Oh, April is no problem! We can definitely work something out for April. :)

I have chosen 4 colours I would in any case go half with you. All 4 colours compliment one another perfectly. I also would take unbleached cream, it is always useful to have for contrast, lining and to paint and dye. I didn't see it and forgot to tick it.

So yes, let me know when you have made your final decision and want to order. I could easily take 10m each from all 5 colours.

It would see me through years to come. :)

Brilliant, thank you! :)

I'm going to email Bishopston next week, to ask them about availability of these summer colours, and when the winter colours are coming out. Then we can decide for definite, and put our order in.

Yay!

Wonderful
I am all goose pimply. It is another step in my life to becoming an Eco-saint. :)

I am earning enough money at the moemnt and put it aside. I don't want you to forward all the money by yourself when you put the order through.

BTW. I tried to find the information, but do we know how wide the fabric is?

Re: Wonderful
Isn't it exciting? I really want to use up all of my "new" fabrics quickly, so I can concentrate properly on recyling duvet covers, and then making more "luxury" items with the Bishopston cotton and the Loop silk and hemp blends.

I have plans for some items made out of polar fleece as well - apparently all of the polyester fleece they sell at my local fabric shop is made out of recycled plastic bottles, so I could have been using that for years!

The Bishopston fabric is 122 cm wide, apparently - so a bit narrower than most fabrics, but still wide enough to do plenty with. :)

Re: Wonderful
Oh, that is so great. The loop fabrics are just wonderful too. I have purchased a lot of Irish linen, which goes a little way to being ecologically sounds as it has only come from across the channel. But yes, from now I shall always aim to be as consciencious as you about fabric purchases. In the end it is well worth waiting and paying for the 'right' thing. :)
122 cm is brilliant anyway. Much less waste when cutting patterns.
